Biography
Born on the island of Dominica, Sharna grew up between the islands of Antigua, Barbados and finally Martinique, where she pursued her studies in fine arts until she obtained her Masters degree. This journey across several Caribbean islands fostered a deep reflection on identity, belonging and memory from an early age. Amid multiple territories, languages and heritages a profound reflection on identity, rootedness and ones place in the world gradually emerged.
This quest for identity extends beyond her personal history. Today, in a world marked by migration, displacement, cultural intermingling and population movements, many people live across multiple territories, languages and heritages. Many carry within them this sense of being deeply connected to several cultures, without fully belonging to any one. These universal questions about origins, transmission, memory and the sense of belonging resonate at the heart of her artistic work. Through her art, Sharna seeks to create a space in which the audience can recognize a part of their own history and their own questions.
Her artistic practice explores the mixed Caribbean heritage, navigating memory, spirituality and contemporary identity. Inspired by the symbols and traditions of Santeria, to which she was introduced in childhood, she developed a sensitive body of work centered on transmission, transformation and a sense of belonging.
Over the years, Sharna has participated in several exhibitions, created murals and led workshops in schools and universities, driven by a constant desire to foster a dialogue around identity, culture and spirituality.
